6.6 Can you evaluate the ongoing debate concerning civil rights and affirmative action?

  1. Affirmative action is defines as a policy designed to give special attention or compensation to members of a previously disadvantaged group. This issue was first addressed in the court case of Regents of the University of California V. Bakke in 1978, which allowed schools to take race into account while considering students. Heavily debated over the last 15 years and most recently debated in the cases Grutter V. Bollinger and Gratz V. Bollinger in 2003, in which the court affirmed the idea that race could, in fact, be considered by colleges but it could not be the defining characteristics of an applicant. Pay equality, especially for the ratio of women to men per hour, becuase women make 77 cents for every dollar a man makes, is taken into account when condisering modern day civl liberties. Also, women are slower to get promoted than men. Latinos who face a language barrier must go through an immigration process before getting hired.
