6.3 Can you analyze the civil rights movement and the effects of the Civil Rights Act of 1964?

  1. The civil rights movement began soon after the decision of Brown v. Board of Education 1&2. These rulings stated that racially segregated systems were unconstitutional and should be fixed as fast as possible. The very first systems that were fixed included state school systems. This fix gave African Americans an early victory towards equality, and would lead to boycotts, sit-ins, freedom rides, pressure voting, and non-violent demonstrations for many years to come. All of these peaceful ways of protesting lead to the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This act gave everyone the full and equal enjoyment of goods services, and privileges in places of public accommodations, such as bathrooms, with no discrimination based on race, color, or religion. This act also gave equality in employment, including pay and opportunities to all. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission was then created to investigate complaints of job discrimination based on race, color or religion. Later on when women's rights were recognized, sex discrimination was investigated by the EEOC as well. To effectively get all businesses to follow the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the act stated funds could be withheld from any program that was assisted federally that were deemed administered discriminatory. For example, if a federally funded restaurant refused the serve African Americans, the federal government could decide to no longer fund that restaurant. The combination of all of this would end up in Amendments being passed to the constitution giving African Americans equality after a very hard-fought battle.
